Our History

The Lewisburg Baptist Church was established in 1843 when approximately 25 members of May's Lick Baptist Church withdrew to form a church in their own community.

Three acres of ground were purchased from George Chinn for $65, and a brick building (now housing the present-day sanctuary) was erected.  The ante-Bellum structure featured a sloping floor and two massive front doors allowing men and women to enter (and sit!) on opposite sides of the building.

A monument still stands in the side yard of the church marking the burial site of Lewisburg's first pastor, elder Charles H. Parker.  A large cemetery located on the hill directly behind the church contains the remains of many pioneer families and early members of the church.

Many improvements to the church facility have been made over the years.  A fellowship hall with indoor plumbing was constructed in the 1960s.  A brick parsonage was built on the church property in the 1970s.  In the 1980s, a two-story multiple Sunday School room addition was created.  In the fall of 2006, a modern renovation of the sanctuary took place.  Land-locked, the church has purchased an adjacent property of three and a half acres directly across from it on Owens Pike with a vision for future development.

More than 160 years later, Lewisburg Baptist Church continues to reach out to the community, the nation, and the world by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and missions.
